The expert craftsmanship at the heart of Grand Seiko

GS GRAND SEIKO

The first Grand Seiko watches were made in 1960, and although they have always been a cult favorite, they weren’t given a full international launch until 2010 – before then, becoming a Grand Seiko owner meant either a trip to Japan or buying from third party re-sellers. Grand Seiko watches up to now have been a Seiko sub-brand, with the Seiko logo at 12:00 and Grand Seiko at 6:00. However, moving forward, Grand Seiko will be presented as an independent brand and the dials will simply read “Grand Seiko.”

Baselworld 2017 Grand Seiko Announcement

Seiko President and CEO Shinji Hattori said, in a released statement, “Grand Seiko has always been distinct in its design, character, presentation, and more recently, its calibers. In order to further reinforce its unique appeal and reach out to a wider audience, we are today taking one step further and presenting Grand Seiko as an entirely separate brand. On all the creations we are presenting here at Baselworld, the Grand Seiko logo is at the 12 o’clock position and this will also be true for all Grand Seiko watches from now onwards.”

GS Grand Seiko SBGH255

A professional diver’s watch, made the Grand Seiko way.

This professional diver's model features the Caliber 9S85, outstanding precision of +5 to -3 seconds a day, that can withstand pressures encountered in saturation diving, down to a depth of 600 meters. The groove on the rotating bezel ensures a firm grip even with thick diving gloves. Luminous markers at every ten seconds ensure the legibility that brings safety to the deep sea diver. Every component is built to last, but all divers know that their watch needs regular maintenance, just like every other device on which his or her life may depend. This is why the case, stem and crown are designed for secure servicing and even the bezel has a four-part design that makes for easy disassembly and re-assembly. The dial is made of pure iron in order to protect the movement from the harmful effects of magnetism. It delivers safe and secure use during diving, in addition, every-day usability is also assured. The watch also features distinctive clean edges appearing in a complex polyhedron and a distortion-free mirror surface created by our experts using Zaratsu polishing.

The modern re-interpretation of the first Grand Seiko

While inheriting the ethos of the first Grand Seiko created in 1960, this contemporary model features an advanced design, new materials, and the Caliber 9S68 large-diameter mechanical movement. While the case width is slighter larger at 40.5 mm, its design belies its actual diameter and makes it feel slimmer. It is made from brilliant hard titanium, a beautiful and resilient new material. It is finished with our Zaratsu polishing technique, which gives the finish a unique brightness that conventional pure titanium lacks. The Grand Seiko logo at the 12 o'clock position is pressure-embossed. The watch has an exhibition case back made of sapphire, through which the 9S68 movement and its high quality finish can be enjoyed, proving perhaps that it is possible to both respect and re-invent even the finest of traditions.

A specially adjusted Spring Drive. Titanium and ceramic in perfect harmony.

This watch features a luxury sports design and a remarkable new hybrid titanium-ceramic bracelet construction. The flat shape of the case was developed with the aim of making the most of the unique characteristics of zirconia ceramic. Despite the difficulties of polishing ceramics, the beautifully crafted ceramic edges on the polyhedral shape are polished to a mirror finish and produce the intricate overlapping reflections that are the characteristics of the Grand Seiko design. The band's combination of these two different materials serves a practical purpose while also accentuating the design. As the zirconia ceramic parts are raised slightly above the level of the titanium, the bracelet is virtually impervious to scratches and will retain its pristine appearance. The dial in its brand color of 'Grand Seiko Blue' that signifies craftsmanship and tradition in Japan and is the theme color of Grand Seiko, together with the hands and index marks of 18k pink gold and the bezel with tachymeter, are exclusive to this limited-edition. This watch uses the Caliber 9R96 Spring Drive movement that has an increased precision rate of ±10 seconds a month, which is equivalent to a daily rate of ±0.5 seconds. As a symbol of this enhanced accuracy, the Grand Seiko emblem in 18k rose gold can be seen through the sapphire case back.

The first Grand Seiko recreated in platinum.

This model is the re-creation of the original platinum model which was produced in a very limited number. The manual winding Caliber 9S64 has been adjusted to an even higher level of precision, -1 to +5 seconds (under static conditions) per day, which is higher than any other Grand Seiko mechanical watch. The platinum 999 used for this model has a higher purity than the 950 that is normally used for watches. The case bears an engraved and etched Grand Seiko logo, a rarity even among original models. The dual-curved sapphire crystal is loyal to the original shape and gives the re-creation the same pleasingly gentle profile. The gentle curve of the domed dial toward the outer perimeter of the dial lends the watch its classic look, which is enhanced by the dual sapphire crystal. The base of the dial is in gold, which allows the Grand Seiko logo to be particularly sharp in its outline and detail.

The entire case is in gold, in place of the 80-micron gold–filled case used in the original. The dual-curved sapphire crystal is loyal to the original shape and gives the re-creation the same pleasingly gentle profile. The gentle curve of the domed dial toward the outer perimeter of the dial lends the watch its classic look, which is enhanced by the dual sapphire crystal. The 18k yellow gold markers with the same diamond cut as on the original watch give this watch a sense of magnificence.
